A Day in Stone Town - Zanzibar

Known globally as the spice islands, Zanzibar boasts food markets, ancient alleyways full of life, and unspoiled beaches. Here’s how to make the most of the day in Stone Town, Zanzibar’s capital.

9 a.m. 

Wake up to the smell of brewing cardamom tea and enjoy views of the Stone Town harbour at Mizingani Seafront Hotel whilst listening to the sounds of bustling street life. Take a walk on the beach and you’ll see the majestic dhows and fishing boats sitting calmly on the fine beach sand. While strolling back from your mini excursion, you’ll hear soothing music coming from the cultural centre, a few blocks away from your hotel, where you can enjoy a delicious East African breakfast spread of spiced tea, sausages, omelets and spicy samosas. 

11 a.m.

Immerse yourself in the history and spirit of Zanzibar as you explore Prison Island. Also known as Changuu (the Swahili word for fish), Prison Island is located 5.6km northwest of Stone Town. The island, which was deserted in 1860, was once used to keep rebellious slaves. Accessible by boat, it takes just 25 minutes to travel from Stone Town, with the trip costing between US$30-$45. The boats are operated by local boat owners and you can bargain that price.

12:30 p.m.

Take a lunch break and indulge your taste buds. Stone Town boasts of a variety of food spots owing to its rich multicultural history. Visit Sunset Bar and Restaurant ar Africa House and have a delicious lunch on the terrace while you savour the views. Visit the lush and verdant Emerson Secret Garden, which is an ideal spot to have a quiet romantic meal; the garden wreaths a rustic building that was once an Indian merchant’s mansion. 

2:30 p.m.

Time for some shopping. There are so many small spice stalls, fabric merchants, and artesian workshops and boutiques scattered throughout Stone Town. Walk through the ancient alleyways and you’ll see artisans hand-crafting furniture and weaving mats and baskets. Alternatively, visit the Darajani Bazaar, the central market in Stone Town, where you’ll find spices teas, figurines, local art, and many other bargains. 

5 p.m. 

Take a dhow cruise and enjoy traditional drumming and dancing while watching the legendary Spice Islands sunset. Finally, head to the Forodhani Gardens, Stone Town’s biggest night market. Bring your bargaining spirit as you embark on a food adventure that will enliven your taste buds. With a budget of US$10, you can enjoy a variety of delicious dishes, from pilau (spiced rice), and zesty barbecue to cold-pressed Stone Town sugar cane juice, a local staple.
