This year, the Telegraph voted Cape Town as the world's best cityand we know exactly why. Here at Charlotte Travel, we've experienced Cape Town inside out - from the wine, to the food to the penguins (yes there are penguins!) and we've all fallen completely head over heels in love with this place.
REASON #1: HISTORY
Cape Town's historyand culture are inextricably linked with that of South Africa. From the days of the Khoisan to the arrival of Jan van Riebeeck, from the dark days of apartheid to the democratic freedoms enjoyed today,Cape Townhas been at the forefront of it all. Be sure to head over to Robben Island and tour the prison where Nelson Mandela spend most of his life in prison with an ex-political prisoner as your guide.
REASON #2: SCENERY
The views from anywhere in Cape Town is bound to blow your mind. Stay at Ellerman House for views of where the South Atlantic Ocean meets the Indian Ocean or at the gorgeous One&Only Cape Town for views of Table Mountain. Hike up Lion's Head one morning for an incredible sunrise over the city or take the cable car up to the top of Table Mountain. Make your way to Camps Bay to enjoy the sun, beach and cool relaxed atmosphere.
REASON #3: CULTURE
Cape Town is full of colour and there's no better place to visit than the Langa Quarter, a 13-street township home to some incredibly talented and creative locals hanging out in cosy cafes, late-night jazz bars and creating beautiful street art.
REASON #4: WILDLIFE
From the infamous penguins on Boulders Beach to whale sightings, swim with seals or diving withsharksand going on safari to see the Big 5, wildlife is never too far away from Cape Town. Just a stone's throw away from the city, take a day trip from Cape Town and drive along the scenic Chapman's Peak to see the penguins or fly to a safari lodge such as Singita's Boulders Lodgefor some of the best Big 5 sightings in the world.
REASON #5: FOOD & WINE
Some of the best wines are produced in South Africa, with more than 200 vineyards in the surrounding areas ofStellenbosch, Paarl, Franschhoekand Wellington, only a short drive outside of Cape Town. Drink wine, explore art galleries and enjoy the food these vineyards have to offer. Whilst in town, we swear by The Test Kitchen, one of the best restaurants in town. Be sure to let us know that you'd like to dine there upon booking your trip and we'll make sure a reservation is made for you well in advance!
There really is no place quite like it. Cape Town is truly one of a kind and here at Charlotte Travel, we suggest spending a few days in this beautiful part of South Africa before or after a pre-planned safari at some of our favourite lodges in the region. There's no better place to relax, unwind, sip wine and eat immaculate food.
